In most places, yes: a gift card you bought or were given is yours, and you can sell it. What makes it illegal is where the card comes from: stolen cards, cards bought with stolen money, cards from a scam, or selling to hide where money came from. This page is general information, not legal advice.
When selling is fine
- You bought it yourself. With your own money, for yourself or as a present you never gave.
- You were given it. A birthday, a holiday, a bonus from work.
- You got it as a refund. Some shops refund returns onto a gift card.
- It's unused. Nobody has redeemed it or added it to an account.
When it isn't
- It was stolen or bought with a stolen payment card or stolen money.
- It came from a scam, for example a card someone talked you into buying and handing over.
- You sell it for someone else, especially a stranger who sends you codes and wants the money passed on.
- It's meant to hide money, like turning cash from an unknown source into crypto.
What card issuers say
Read the terms printed on your card or on the issuer's website. Issuers can block cards they believe come from fraud, and a blocked card is rejected when we check it. A card that was bought normally and never used is checked like any other.
How we keep it clean
Every account has a daily limit that grows with cards that clear. Above certain amounts, or when something looks unusual, we ask for an ID document and the receipt. Cards that turn out to be stolen are frozen together with the balance they created, and where the law requires it we report to Georgia's Financial Monitoring Service. The details are in our AML & KYC policy.
What about taxes?
Selling a gift card usually means getting less than its face value, so most sellers make no profit on it. If you sell often, or as part of a business, ask a tax adviser in your country.
Questions
Do I need to show ID to sell a gift card?
Not for everyday amounts. Above certain amounts, or when something looks unusual, we ask for an ID document and the receipt, as our AML & KYC policy explains.
Can I sell a gift card I got as a present?
Yes. A card you were given is yours to sell, as long as it's unused and wasn't bought with stolen money.
Is it legal to sell gift cards for crypto?
Selling a gift card and receiving crypto is allowed in most countries, but not in all. Check the rules where you live; our terms don't allow use from countries where it's forbidden.
Can someone else sell a card for me, or I for them?
No. You can only sell cards that are yours. Selling for other people is a common way to move stolen money, and accounts that do it are frozen.
